Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
A breaker trips to protect your home’s electrical circuit. Learn the common causes, what you can safely check, and when it’s time to call an electrician.
If a breaker trips once, it may simply be doing its job. But if the same breaker keeps tripping, it is telling you that something on that circuit needs attention.
The cause could be too many devices running at once, a problem with an appliance, moisture near an outlet, or an issue with the wiring itself. You do not need to take anything apart to narrow it down.
First: Know When to Stop
Do not reset the breaker if you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparks, a buzzing or crackling sound, a warm or discolored outlet or panel, water near electrical equipment, or a damaged cord or plug.
Leave the breaker off and call an electrician if the breaker trips immediately after being reset, trips when nothing is plugged in, or will not stay on. Those signs can point to a wiring or equipment problem that needs professional diagnosis.instaelectricians
Step 1: Identify What Lost Power
When the breaker trips, take a quick walk through the affected part of the home.
Look for:
Rooms, outlets, lights, or appliances that are no longer working.
Appliances that were running when the power went out.
High-power items on the same circuit, such as space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, air fryers, toaster ovens, portable air conditioners, vacuums, shop tools, or heated bathroom accessories.
Exterior, garage, bathroom, kitchen, laundry, or basement outlets that may be connected to the same circuit.
Your panel labels may help, but they are not always completely accurate—especially in an older home or after a remodel. Make a note of what was affected. That information is useful if you need an electrician.
Step 2: Look for an Obvious Overload
An overloaded circuit is one of the most common and easiest issues to identify. It happens when too many things are asking for power at once.
For example, a kitchen circuit may trip if a microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker are running at the same time. In a bedroom or living room, a portable heater on the same circuit as electronics, lamps, and chargers can do the same thing.
Before resetting the breaker:
Turn off light switches in the affected area.
Unplug portable devices and appliances on that circuit.
Pay special attention to anything that produces heat or has a motor.
Do not use extension cords or power strips as a permanent way to add more capacity.

Step 3: Reset the Breaker Once
Only reset the breaker after the affected devices are unplugged or switched off.
Find the breaker that is in the middle position or switched to “OFF.”
Push it firmly all the way to the OFF position first.
Then move it firmly back to the ON position.
Check whether power has returned.

Step 4: Add Devices Back One at a Time
If the breaker stays on after you reset it, reconnect items one at a time.
Start with normal, low-power items such as lamps or phone chargers. Then test higher-power appliances individually. Give the circuit a few minutes between devices, especially with equipment that has a motor or heating element.
If the breaker trips again soon after a specific appliance is plugged in or turned on:
Stop using that appliance.
Unplug it.
Check the cord and plug for visible damage, discoloration, loose parts, or signs of overheating.
Do not keep testing it on other outlets if it appears damaged or repeatedly trips the breaker.
If the breaker stays on until several devices are used together, the circuit may simply be overloaded. That may be solved by spreading appliances across different circuits, or it may be a sign that your home would benefit from an additional dedicated circuit.
Step 5: Check GFCI Outlets
In kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, unfinished spaces, outdoors, and near sinks, a GFCI outlet may also be involved. A GFCI outlet has TEST and RESET buttons and can shut off power to itself and sometimes other outlets downstream.
If a few outlets have stopped working but the breaker is on:
Look for a GFCI outlet in the affected area or nearby rooms.
Press the RESET button once.
If it will not reset, do not force it or take it apart.
Check that the area is dry and there is no moisture around the outlet.
A GFCI that will not reset can indicate a tripped protection device, a downstream issue, or a wiring problem. It is a good reason to schedule troubleshooting.
